Two local young people were recognised recently at the awards ceremony of national contractor, Mears. Liam Benton received the Mears 2017 Smile of the Year Award whilst Jack Norman was awarded the Reg Pomphrett Apprentice of the Year Award 2017. Both Liam and Jack work for Mears Morrison, the repairs and maintenance contractor working for Rotherham Council.

Liam is a multi-trade joiner who joined the Mears family as an apprentice. He constantly works to extremely high standards and is not afraid to use his initiative.

Liam is truly deserving of this award as he went above and beyond his call of duty to help one of our tenants when she needed medical assistance and did everything in his power to keep her safe till emergency services arrived.

Liam has always lead by example, exemplifying our Red Thread Behaviours, and is a worthy recipient of this award. He has aspirations to progress within the Mears business and has an ultimate goal of becoming a Senior Leader in the company.

Jack is an exceptional young man who has come a very long way in a very short time. He came to us with a limited knowledge of our business and now has taken on some considerable responsibility within his first year in the role of Apprentice Quantity Surveyor.

This responsibility has come much earlier than would be traditionally expected as a Quantity Surveyor in training. It reflects Jacks’ commitment to his development and career goals. He made the difficult decision to leave sixth form part way through his first year and dedicate his learning to becoming a Quantity Surveyor.

At just 18 years of age, Jack has proven to be very mature, making career-changing decisions. He is a very determined young man who has clear ambitions and is dedicated to his ultimate goal.

Rotherham Branch General Manager, Andrew Chambers, said “Myself and the Rotherham Team are all very proud of Liam and Jack. They are great ambassadors for Mears and for Rotherham and we are very lucky to have such great talent within our team.”
