About

Who We Are

We're legal advisors with a difference, headquartered in Sheffield, based in offices across the UK, and with an international presence as members of First Law International.

Giving the best possible advice is about more than knowledge and expertise. It means understanding the people and businesses you work with as deeply as possible. It means taking the time to listen to what matters most to them.

We couldn't do for our clients what we do without our colleagues or our communities either - read more about Irwin Mitchell's clients, colleagues and communities.

What We Do

We're a full-service law firm, which means whatever advice you need or problem you have, we can help.

Business

Our lawyers are more than just problem-solvers. We're your long-term strategic advisors. We'll work with you and your teams to give practical, commercially-minded advice tailored to your specific goals and targets.

You'll get comprehensive insight and support from solicitors who truly understand your sector and the market pressures you face.

As a full-service firm, we can help advise and represent you in any area of law, and you can rest assured that you're getting one integrated plan that takes all your legal needs into account.

We're also the UK partner of First Law International, an elite global network of law firms, and can help you access world-class legal advice around the world.

Personal

We all need legal advice at some point in our personal lives.

It can help us through some of our key milestones - buying a house, getting married, planning retirement, providing for your kids' future, or moving to a new country.

But it's also vital when things don't go according to plan - if you're hurt in an accident, a medical procedure goes wrong, a loved one loses mental capacity, or you're treated unfairly by work or the government. It could also be a difficult family matter such as a separation or a dispute over a will.

And it can also give us peace of mind for the future, whether that's with a new Will, a power of attorney, or a solid financial plan.

Whatever your situation, we have specialists ready to help. We'll listen to you and strive for the best possible outcome.

Our History

Irwin Mitchell's story goes back all the way to 1912, when Walter Irwin Mitchell founded the law firm in Sheffield.

We originally focused on criminal law, but by the 1980s we were working on some of the UK's most high-profile personal injury cases, including:

  • The Zeebrugge ferry disaster
  • The Marchioness riverboat disaster
  • The British Airtours Boeing 737 disaster at Manchester Airport
  • The Kegworth Air Crash
  • The Lockerbie Pan-Am flight terrorist bombing

As our reputation grew around the country, it was time for the firm to grow with it. In 1989 we opened our second office, in Birmingham.

This growth continued into the 1990s with a series of mergers and acquisitions and offices opening in Leeds and London. By 2007, we'd moved into Newcastle, Manchester, and Glasgow, too. Expansion in the South of England continues through the 2010s.

Through this journey, Irwin Mitchell has become the largest full-service law firm in the UK with leading private client and business legal departments.

But we're not ones to rest on our laurels. We're always exploring innovative new ways to help more people and give our clients even better service. We're consistently ranked one of the country's top firms by independent legal directories and win a wide variety of awards for the quality of our work. In 2019, we achieved Superbrand status for the first time, alongside international heavyweights as varied as British Airways, eBay, and LEGO.

Our Locations

We have offices across the UK, so wherever you're based, we can help.

If you can't make it to an office, we can connect by phone, video or email, or, where possible, even meet you somewhere that's convenient for you. If you're not in the UK, we can help with international legal issues too.

We know that things like buying a property or running a business can be very different in different parts of the country. We find that having a presence around the country helps us to keep up-to-date and give the best possible advice that's relevant to your local area. We have solicitors throughout England, Wales and Scotland. Our growing partnerships with firms such as WJM in Scotland also allow us to deal with complex jurisdiction issues throughout the UK.
