Local Funding to Develop the Next Generation of Operations Leaders

With support from SYMCA (South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority) and SkillsBank Funding, the Compass program was created to empower 40 newly appointed Operations middle managers at Premier Foods in Barnsley. Designed and delivered by Bobby Singh of BSA Training, and championed by Emma Harrison, L&D Business Partner at Premier Foods, Compass equips leaders with the skills to inspire teams, drive change, and deliver measurable results.

Over ten months, participants engage in interactive workshops, practical exercises, and peer learning, covering the full spectrum of leadership skills required in today’s fast-paced business environment. Managers have described the experience as both energising and insightful. One participant shared:

“I’ve learnt so much about how different people can be, and how their personalities really impact the way we work and the team’s morale. I genuinely felt so energised after today’s training session!”

A Comprehensive Leadership Journey

The Compass program covers ten key areas designed to develop well-rounded, confident leaders:

  • Know Yourself to Lead Yourself: Understand personal strengths, behavioural preferences, and how to work effectively with diverse teams.

  • Lead with Impact: Transition from colleague to leader, adopt situational leadership, and empower teams through coaching.

  • Build High-Performing Teams: Encourage collaboration, break down silos, and create team charters aligned to organisational values.

  • Performance that Inspires: Motivate, coach, and drive accountability to unlock team potential.

  • Change and Innovation: Embrace change, overcome resistance, and develop creative problem-solving skills.

  • Handle Conflict with Confidence: Resolve disagreements constructively and foster a culture of accountability.

  • Work Smarter, Not Harder: Master time management, prioritisation, and effective delegation.

  • Resilience That Lasts: Manage stress, adapt to change, and remain focused under pressure.

  • Communicate to Influence: Sharpen interpersonal skills, choose the right communication medium, and win hearts and minds.

  • Present with Confidence: Deliver presentations that inform, persuade, and inspire.

Participants consistently praise the delivery and engagement. As one noted:

“Bobby does an excellent job of putting things across and keeping everyone involved and interested. A very interesting and enjoyable course.”

Driving Measurable Impact

Compass isn’t just about learning—it’s about results. Managers are already reporting greater confidence in leading change, improved team performance, and enhanced collaboration. On completion, the program aims to improve retention by 10%+, reduce absence, and increase overall productivity.

Emma Harrison adds:

“We expect to see a strong return on investment in leadership development on completion and are delighted that we found BSA.”

Why Compass Works

Tailored, practical, and interactive, Compass transforms newly appointed managers into confident, capable leaders. By combining structured learning, real-world problem solving, and coaching, the program ensures that skills learned are immediately applied in the workplace. SYMCA and BSA are proud to deliver a program that is already making a tangible difference to individuals and the business.
