HLM Architects Unveils Striking Ten Metre Mural by Local Artist

HLM Architects has unveiled a striking new mural in its Sheffield studio, created by Barnsley-based artist Adam Briscoe. Inspired by the city’s iconic landmarks, rich musical history and memorable cultural moments, the artwork offers a vibrant celebration of Sheffield’s past and present.

Situated along the main staircase of HLM’s Sheffield studio, the mural features local references while also reflecting the company’s own journey and projects delivered over its more than 40-year history.

The 10m x 2.5m artwork took more than three weeks and 110 hours to complete, hand-drawn and painted freehand without the use of projectors or stencils. Adam collaborated closely with HLM to bring the mural to life, weaving in Sheffield’s landmarks, culture and playful details, while incorporating elements of the studio’s own history.

Adam Briscoe is known for creating bespoke wall art and murals that transform spaces and tell unique stories. He has delivered projects in hospitals, schools, universities, food courts and commercial spaces across Yorkshire.

Adam Briscoe, an artist known for bespoke murals across Yorkshire, said:

“This mural is one of my first major pieces in Sheffield city centre. To date, I’ve built my following in my hometown but now I’m focused on branching out further into Yorkshire, so it was great to be commissioned by HLM for this piece.

“Every mural is individually designed and carefully tailored to the client. We worked together to find the right balance between showing Sheffield’s culture and HLM’s own story. I also always try to bring comedy and character into my drawings – that slightly bizarre, playful energy is a big part of my style. I hope people will keep noticing new details in the mural for years to come.”

Located in the heart of the city, HLM’s Sheffield studio is the oldest and largest of the practice’s seven studios, buzzing with creativity and collaboration.

Andy Illingworth, Head of Interiors at HLM Architects, said:

“We’re incredibly proud to showcase Adam’s work in our Sheffield studio. This mural is more than a piece of art – it’s a celebration of the city that has shaped so much of our practice.

“Adam has captured Sheffield’s character, creativity, and heritage beautifully, while also telling HLM’s own story. Supporting local talent is central to what we do, and commissioning this mural reflects our commitment to investing in the people, creativity and culture that make Sheffield unique. It brings a real sense of place and energy to our workspace, and we hope it inspires everyone who visits.”
