Barnsley & Rotherham Chamber Celebrates Mattress Online’s Remarkable 20 Years in Business

Barnsley & Rotherham Chamber of Commerce is delighted to celebrate the two-decade milestone achievement of Mattress Online, a thriving Rotherham business that has transformed the sleep industry since its inception in December 2003.

Recently named one of the “Fifty fastest growing firms in the North of England” for 2023 and shortlisted in the 2023 Yorkshire Post Business Excellence in Business Awards, Mattress Online is a trailblazer in the sleep industry.

From humble beginnings in co-founder Steve Adams’ bedroom in December 2003, Mattress Online embarked on its journey with just a handful of products. The company’s dedication and commitment to quality soon paid off, marking the beginning of a remarkable trajectory.

While mattresses remain at the core of the South Yorkshire retailer’s business, Mattress Online has expanded its product range to include beds and sofa beds. The company’s growth is evident in its doubled turnover, reaching £29 million in 2022, with a pre-tax profit of £2.2 million over the past five years—a testament to its strategic and customer-focused approach.

What sets Mattress Online apart is its commitment to sustainability and community impact. In 2015, the company introduced an innovative mattress recycling service on a non-profit basis as part of its ESG framework. Mattress Online aims to recycle 40% of all mattresses by 2025, having already saved over 150,000 mattresses from ending up in landfills.

Despite being primarily an online retailer, Mattress Online is set to expand its brick-and-mortar presence with plans to open 20 physical stores within the next three years. With three stores already operating in the north of England, the company aims to enhance brand awareness and provide customers with the opportunity to test mattresses before making a purchase.
