Barnsley & Rotherham Chamber welcomes breakthrough on Doncaster Sheffield Airport
Barnsley & Rotherham Chamber of Commerce has welcomed the announcement that Mayor Oliver Coppard intends to back funding proposals to reopen Doncaster Sheffield Airport.
The Chamber described this as a pivotal step in the long-running effort to secure the airport’s future and unlock the wider economic opportunities it represents for South Yorkshire. They also emphasised the importance of all four South Yorkshire local authorities voting unanimously in favour, to demonstrate a united front to Government, investors, and airlines that this is a truly regional endeavour with long-term benefits.
Carrie Sudbury, Chief Executive of Barnsley and Rotherham Chamber, said:
“Businesses across Barnsley and Rotherham, have been clear: reopening the airport is about much more than aviation. It represents an opportunity to drive growth, attract investment, and create skilled jobs that will benefit communities across the region. Today’s commitment is a vital step forward, and we look forward to seeing all four local authorities work together to ensure the strongest possible message is sent about our region’s ambition.”
Only last week, Mayor Coppard addressed Chamber members and explained that, while he supported DSA in principle, he was still carefully considering whether to commit funding. This latest development therefore provides businesses and stakeholders with greater certainty at a critical time for the project.
