You are invited to the next event in SY100’s Building Sustainable Communities event series where we’re exploring the the UN Sustainable Development Goals in the context of South Yorkshire.

Mental health intersects and influences nearly all of the SDGs: poverty, marginalization, violence and complex emergencies threaten both human development and sustainable economic development. Mental health disorders have been identified as a global barrier to sustainable development.

Found to be a top priority for action in the latest Vital Signs report, the state of mental health in South Yorkshire is at a crisis point and we need to collaborate to build the necessary infrastructure to support our communities.

This Mental Health Awareness Week event is hosted by Mike McCarthy. Mike is a presenter/ reporter turned mental health ambassador following the loss of his son from suicide. Hear his story and join the discussion on how local businesses can help to build the resilience of our communities to respond better to the mental health crisis. Leave with resolve as to how you can support yourself, your network and your community.

We’ll be hearing from different areas of our community to help your business build mental health resilience from the inside out. Also meet exhibiting community organisations working to support mental health across South Yorkshire.

  • 4pm – Event opens, drinks and canapes and stalls open
  • 4.30pm – Presentations
  • 6pm – Presentations end, drinks and canapes and stalls open
  • 6.30pm – Event ends

Formerly a BBC Look North and Sky News reporter Mike McCarthy became a mental health ambassador after his son Ross took his own life in 2021. Mike now advocates for more support for mental health and has set up successful Talk Clubs with Sheffield United Community Foundation.

Education providers were in a unique position during the height of the pandemic. Barnsley College’s student led approach to wellbeing proved its strength in the face of lockdowns. Hear directly from the student rep on the impact of their methods and how you can support yourself and your circle.

Working in the construction industry, Henry Boot recognises the responsibility they have to keeping their people safe. They have implemented a robust mental health infrastructure to support colleagues. Hear about why they’re doing it and how you can support your business network too.

Hey! Let’s Talk (formerly known as TADS) support young people across Barnsley with their mental health and see first hand the crisis point our community is facing and the impact a lack of support is having on our communities. Hear how you can help and support the local area you work in. (Advanced notice that this presentation will contain reference to trauma and may be triggering).
