Department for International Trade (DIT) helps businesses export and grow into global markets, and also help overseas companies locate and grow in the UK.

Services are provided in over 100 markets throughout the world. They are delivered by:

  • over 1,200 staff outside the UK
  • around 500 staff in our London and Glasgow headquarters
  • around 400 staff based in the English regions

DIT are passionate about what they do. They constantly review their services in light of customer feedback and the impact they offer, which means they’ll vary from time to time.

Exporting for Growth Funding Programme

The Department for International Trade (DIT) Yorkshire and the Humber are delivering a programme of £6.7m of European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) funding for the Exporting for Growth and Global Growth Programmes.

The programmes deliver support to both first time exporters and those already exporting, across Sheffield City Region, to allow businesses to grow their success within international markets. Any company looking for funding must be working with the Department for International Trade and any support must fit within a company’s overall export strategy.

ERDF, part of the European Structural and Investment Funds programme (ESIF), provides funding to support economic growth for England. The programmes focus on strengthening the regions’ businesses and increasing employment. Companies can access matched financial support to develop exports and generate job creation.

Exporting for Growth Programme

Exporting for Growth is aimed at companies wanting to develop their international business or get started with international trade. In addition to the funding, companies will receive impartial and tailored advice from DIT International Trade Adviser who will be happy to assist you throughout the process and project.

Eligible SME’s (Small to Medium Enterprises) can apply for grants of up to £3,000 depending on size and capability as part of the Exporting for Growth programme which is match funded and can be used for various projects. The funding requires one new job to be created as part of your project.

What can the funding be used for?

  • Flights and accommodation to agreed target markets
  • Overseas trade events entry and exhibition costs
  • Design and production of international marketing material
  • Internationalisation of website including translations
  • International market research and consultancy services

Applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • The company must be located in the Sheffield City Region, Leeds City Region or Humber LEP
  • Be an SME – Less than 250 employees and annual turnover does not exceed €50 million OR annual balance sheet does not exceed €43 million
  • No more than 25% of the organisation is owned by an enterprise that in itself is not an SME

Every month DIT publish hundreds of new export opportunities from around the world. You can also search for events, trade fairs, missions and webinars.

DIT provide access to a regional network of international trade specialists across the UK which:

  • help businesses acquire the skills, contacts and confidence to start exporting or to break into new markets
  • work closely with a global network of DIT advisers, to ensure UK businesses are given the best advice about exporting to their chosen destinations

  • e-exporting, to help retailers and brands to sell their products online
  • tradeshow access, providing grants to eligible businesses so they can attend overseas events

UK Export Finance (UKEF) helps UK exporters:

  • win export contracts by providing attractive financing terms to their buyers
  • fulfil orders by supporting working capital loans
  • get paid by insuring against buyer default
