Love Barnsley Town Centre – COVID-19 Update

Information provided by Love Barnsley Town Centre e-Newsletter 20th March, original found here

Barnsley Market to temporarily close on Mondays and Tuesdays until further notice: home delivery service now available

Barnsley Market will close temporarily on a Monday and Tuesday in response to COVID-19. This is to allow stallholders to replenish stock, while reducing pressure on staffing levels, especially with school closures and self-isolation measures. There is no change to the opening hours of 8.30am until 4.30pm.

Traders have also been given the option to trade outside. E B Price Greengrocers and Potts Bakery will operate outside on Monday and Tuesday – while Dave & Dave Fruit & Veg will operate outside on Tuesdays. Outdoor markets are currently unaffected by the changes.

The council is working with and supporting traders through this unprecedented time. Locals are encouraged to support local businesses and continue shopping locally. The situation is constantly evolving and the council will continue to follow government advice and guidance.

A new home delivery service is also now available between 9am-4pm. Place your order online via shopappy.com/barnsley. Similar to a supermarket home delivery service, locals will be able to order their market shopping from any of the traders who are part of the ShopAppy scheme. They’ll then be able to choose an option for home delivery at checkout, before goods are delivered between 9am-4pm on the delivery day chosen.

The town’s taxi drivers will deliver goods from the market to those struggling to get their shopping who live in the Barnsley borough. Items will be left on the doorstep of shoppers. The driver will ring the doorbell/knock at the door and then stand at least two metres away from the house, to ensure customers can safely collect shopping. The delivery service will cost £5.
Shoppers will also be able to click and collect from the market collection point, at its May Day Green entrance, between 1pm-7pm on market days.

Anyone with additional requirements for delivery should call 01226 772239.

Barnsley town centre events postponed – a message from the team

Barnsley Council’s Arts and Events Team is following all guidelines issued regarding the current advice during the COVID-19 pandemic.

It is with regret that we are announcing the postponement of all planned town centre events for the foreseeable future.
This means that we will no longer deliver:

• The April Fools Comedy Festival – more information about specific show cancellations here.
• Tour De Yorkshire – more information here.
• VE Day Ceremonies
• Game On! Gaming Festival.
• Barnsley’s Big Weekend – includes Mayor’s Parade, Pride and Destination Festival.
• Dancing Town.

As we move forward in the coming weeks we will monitor and assess the situation as it develops and release more information about the planned autumn/winter events programme.

We also encourage event planners across the borough to be mindful of the current advice issued by the Government and urge everyone to follow all guidelines about the delivery of events.

The team looks forward to bringing the event programme back to the public when it is safe to do so.
