Mark Takes the Mic to Stand Up Against Loneliness

Chamber member and local business owner of MAKE YOUR MARK UK, Mark Smith is gearing up to address loneliness in a distinctive manner—utilizing the art of stand-up comedy. On December 10th, Mark will command the spotlight at The Leadmill, demonstrating his comedic prowess to generate funds for the local Sheffield Churches Council for Community Care (SCCCC) charity. The charity is dedicated to the noble cause of aiding isolated and lonely older individuals in the community.

Mark Smith, known for his daring fundraising initiatives, ranging from 10K runs to trekking across the Sahara, is now stepping into the world of stand-up comedy. The seasoned philanthropist has braved sleep-outs, extreme assault courses, and even a fire walk, but this time, he’s facing a different kind of challenge. The charity comedy night, organised by Ultra Comedy, offers participants a unique opportunity. Budding comedians undergo an intensive 8-week training course led by a professional comic, preparing them to perform live on stage in front of friends and family at a glamorous event. The event promises laughter and entertainment, all in the name of a good cause.

Mark shared his motivation for venturing into stand-up comedy, saying, “I wanted to do something that was outside of my comfort zone, and I think doing stand-up in front of a room full of people certainly ticks that box. Working part time at SCCCC, I have some understanding of what it must be like for older people who are isolated and alone. However, this last year has been pretty tough personally. My mum hasn’t been well and has had a very challenging time which is still ongoing. So I’ve had a bit more of an insight than I expected about how rough it can be for older people, and the thought of those without any family or friends to help them breaks my heart.”

SCCCC, with a legacy dating back to 1966, has been a pillar of support for isolated and lonely older people. Their free services extend a helping hand to individuals upon discharge from the hospital and in their own homes, offering timely support when they need it most. The charity works closely with health professionals across Sheffield and Doncaster, ensuring that support reaches those who need it in a timely manner.

Join Mark Smith on December 10th at The Leadmill for a night of laughter, camaraderie, and fundraising, as he stands up against loneliness in his own unique way.
