RNN Group launches Student Designed new Environmental Logo

RNN Group launched a new student designed environmental logo to support the focus the Group has on sustainability and green initiatives.

Gracie Firth, an 18 year old graphic design student who studied at Rotherham College last year and who specialises in illustration alongside a love of creating logos and poster designs won the competition.

Gracie said, “RNN Group announced their sustainability brand earlier this year, and asked our students to

create a logo to promote sustainability throughout the colleges and I saw this as a wonderful opportunity to use my creative skills to design this logo, and help others recognize and understand sustainability.

“The logo design consists of a leaf in 4 sections. Each section is a different colour, which represents each of the 4 college/university buildings in RNN Group. These are Rotherham College, Dearne Valley College, North Notts College, and The University Centre Rotherham.

She continued, “The reason I decided to choose a leaf shape for my logo is because of the connotations leaves have with nature and the environment.

“Leaves play an important role in the earth’s biosphere as they work together to support life in nature and keep plants alive and in my logo, this represents how humans need to work together to make changes and keep the environment and natural habitats alive.

Gracie added finally, “I hope that my logo can help the college and students to recognise the environmental issues and how we can overcome them.”

Jason Austin, CEO and Principal of RNN Group and one of the judges of the competition, said, “We were excited to see the quality and ideas for the new logo in the many entries we received for the competition from our learners, but Gracie’s design, her story and her additional supporting social media posts were a wonderful representation of the sustainability work of the Group.

“RNN Group works hard to operate as sustainability as possibly but we want to continue to do all we can to support with sustainable initiatives for our staff and the Group to work towards a more sustainable future.”

The RNN Group operates sustainably in a number of areas including in:

• energy and utilities with solar panels / solar heaters, wind turbines and a ground source heat pump at one college to produce clean energy, as well as capturing rainwater for use and moving to LED lights.
• Travel and travel reduction operating a number of Electric charging points as well as a salary sacrifice scheme for bike users, bike boxes for secure cycle storage and shower facilities for bike users too.
• Our Transport provider Zeelo is the first global bus platform to offer 100% carbon neutral services
• Recycling & Upcycling with our students running clothing rails across the Group for pre-loved clothing to be picked up by another learner and a use of recycled wood, metal and plaster across our construction departments as well as recycling cardboard and paper.

• Print & Paper where as a Group we have moved to non PVC banners which does not involve the use of fossil fuels, all paper that we use for our literature is FSC graded or recycled and we are moving to the use of QR codes linked to our website on small business cards to reduce our use and reliance on paper.
