Trustees Wanted Boys and Girls Clubs South Yorkshire

This year sees the Boys and Girls Clubs of South Yorkshire celebrate 80 years of service to young people in South Yorkshire.

We are looking to recruit trustees who want to help young people achieve their potential by taking the work of the charity forward. We are looking to widen the diversity of the board of trustees as we are very conscious that we have just three trustees who are all older white males.

We would like to recruit trustees who may:

  • Have influence that will assist the charity in achieving its aims
  • Have knowledge of youth work and the challenges that young people face
  • Have empathy with the aims of the charity
  • Bring greater diversity to the board and be prepared to share their views and experiences.

In return we offer the opportunity to get involved in a long established charity that provides services to young people through a range of work streams that include:

  • Club development: we have over 30 affiliated clubs, some of which are boxing clubs, which are run by volunteers who are qualified youth workers. The clubs are spread across the county with most being in the more deprived communities. We look to open new clubs in communities that have a need and to support existing clubs with activities and fund raising.
  • Vocational Skills Programme: this is a programme which takes young people aged 14 to 16 years who would otherwise be excluded from education. The programme enables them to gain an accredited qualification, learn life skills, promotes learning about sports, health and fitness, to access mentoring and to learn and achieve in an alternative environment.
  • Construction Skills Programme: similar to the vocational skills but with the participants gaining an accredited qualification that covers basic electrical skills, painting and decorating and joinery.
  • Activity Programmes: During school holidays we run activity programmes that engage young people in a range of opportunities including residential breaks, mountain biking, indoor skiing, laser tag etc. The activities are heavily subsidised to give the young people a chance to experience things that they otherwise would not have the opportunity to take part in.
  • The Respect Programme: which encourages young people to understand and respect others; to develop critical thinking skills and build resilience. Helping them to think how they might contribute positively to the world around them.
