Chamber sparks interest in regulations shake-up

The Chamber is urging electricians and anyone who has responsibilities for installing or maintaining electrical circuits to prepare themselves for some significant changes which come into effect next year, with the publication of the 18th edition of the Wiring Regulations.

Set to be published on 1st July, the new regulations will come into effect on 1st January 2019 and must be followed by everyone working in the electrical industry, replacing the 17th edition which is currently in use.

The updated changes in regulations are expected to include protection against over-voltages, protection against
fire, extensions in sections such as embedded electrical heating systems and the implementation of a brand new chapter on energy-efficiency.

To help understand the implications of the new regulations, Barnsley & Rotherham Chamber has announced the introduction of a number of courses focusing on the changes in regulations, which will be delivered by Chamber Skills Solutions, the Chamber’s training arm.

The courses will run throughout the year, with the first taking place on 10th July. The three day-long courses are designed to provide a comprehensive overview of the new regulations and to equip anyone working in the electrical sector with the skills and knowledge to ensure their work complies with the new regulations.

Carrie Sudbury, Training Manager, Chamber Skills Solutions said: “There is only a six month window for anyone working with electricity to get up to speed with the new regulations before they come into effect. As a support provider to businesses in Barnsley, Rotherham and the surrounding areas, we want to help anyone working with electricity to prepare themselves ahead of the introduction of the new regulations.

“Throughout the year we are hosting a number of courses designed to provide a full overview of the regulations, as well as creating an opportunity for individuals working with electricity to understand how the new rules will be applied to their work ahead of the planned changes. The courses will provide participants with BS7671 accreditation and we are advising electricians to prepare themselves for the changes which come into effect next year.”

Chamber Skills Solutions hosts a wide range of courses designed to ensure individuals working in Barnsley and Rotherham have the skills needed to succeed in the workplace and to ensure they are up to date with regulations and changes in their industry. Courses run throughout the year and cover a wide range of subject areas including Construction skills to First Aid, Health & Safety, IT, Sales & Marketing and more.

Workshops are priced at £420 +VAT for members and £520 +VAT for non-members.
